This is a historic moment, as the sauna tradition is the first tradition from Finland to be selected for the list of intangible cultural heritage.

The endeavor to get the sauna tradition onto the intangible cultural heritage list has been a long one, aiming to cherish the continuity of the sauna tradition, strengthen the vitality of sauna culture, and highlight the significance of Finnish sauna culture. After Finland signed UNESCO's Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013, practical steps were initiated, as stated by the Finnish Sauna Society in its press release. The Finnish Sauna Society has taken several actions to get sauna bathing onto the intangible cultural heritage list, including getting sauna bathing onto the Living Heritage wiki list and preparing a UNESCO application. An important part of the endeavor was also the Finnish state, represented by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the official authority the Finnish Heritage Agency, which liaised with UNESCO.
